Freaky Cuttlefish

[yo i be watchin you from inside my egg]

Apparently cuttlefish can see out of their egg shells, so they're watching they're surroundings from before birth. Like this little fella here:

so its kinda creepy.

"These unborn cuttlefish also have fully developed eyes... the cuttlefish embryos must peer through their eggs, and learn to recognise their prey, a behaviour which will help give them a head-start in life."

Damn. these things get freakier and freakier.

[cuttlefish courting]

Basically, some males have to pretend to be females to get past consort males to the real females by "changing colour to mimic females and hiding their masculine fourth arms."

"Of the five males that tried to mate, one was rejected, one was unmasked by the "consort male", and three were successful.

Two of the three successfully fathered offspring with the female.

But there were risks attached. Some of the larger males got a little confused - researchers saw 41 attempts to mate with the fake females."

hahahaha.
